Kairos vs. Chronos

From Book 1: the distinction between chronological time, Chronos, and opportune time, Kairos.

In the context of the three wounds, Kairos is the moment when the discernment between attachment and release, between assertion and anonymity, becomes possible.

The wounds are, in part, failures of Kairos:

• Attachment is the retention of what should have been released at the right time
• Dissolution is the release of what should have been retained at the right time
• The taunt is the assertion of identity at the wrong time

Book 10 — The Vanishing Year

Kairos appears as a break in chronological time. The vanishing year is precisely the absence of Kairos.

Books 12–24

In each book, Kairos appears as the kairotic intervention — a break in chronological time that opens the possibility of a different direction. A key observation across the later books: the kairotic moments become increasingly human rather than divine, suggesting the participants have learned to create opportune time through disciplined attention.
